Mission Statement:

The Ketchikan CHARR Educational Fund, Inc. / King Salmon Derby is dedicated to providing a quality fishing tournament for the enjoyment of all participants with proceeds benefiting scholarships to local students.

Description:

The Ketchikan King Salmon Derby is managed by a volunteer committee under the direction of the Ketchikan CHARR Educational Fund, Inc.. The king salmon derby is in its 61st year as a Ketchikan tradition.

This family event has remained a grass roots effortover the 61 years of its existence, with over one thousand participants of all ages annually and local businesses sponsoring the variety of cash and prizes given away to the successful anglers.

All proceeds remain in this community and are given back to the community in a variety of ways. Four non-profit organizations partner with the Derby, staffing the weigh in stations. They are the the Society of American Foresters Dixon Entrance Chapter, the Ketchikan Volunteer Rescue Squad, and the Rotary 2000; we are looking for another non-profit to man the Bar Harbor station for 2008. Each is given a stipend for their work which is then distributed through their respective activities throughout the local area.

The proceeds from the Derby have supported such projects as training for the local Search and Rescue group, the Deer Mountain Hatchery, and the downtown Ketchikan welcome arch. Currently, all proceeds from the Derby are used to provide
scholarships for local students.
